How did Trainbid come to be?
Trainbid was founded by collectors, for collectors — born from frustration with other marketplaces charging excessively high fees and offering customer support from people with no real knowledge of the hobby. When we looked around, there was no true alternative: nothing that offered a structured, safe, and enjoyable marketplace with features designed specifically for collectors. So we built Trainbid — a dedicated platform created by hobbyists, combining lower fees, real expertise, and an easy-to-use experience that even beginners or those managing inherited collections can confidently navigate. At Trainbid, we believe the love of the hobby should come first — and that every collector deserves a platform built with them in mind.
Can I only sell trains on Trainbid?
While Trainbid is primarily geared toward model train collectors, it's designed to support the natural crossovers of the hobby world. Sellers can list and buyers can browse items across a wide range of collectible and hobby categories — including model cars, planes, RC, toy soldiers, wargaming, LEGO, action figures, books, apparel, hobby room memorabilia, and more. Trainbid currently offers 23 main categories to help fulfill your collecting and hobby needs, all within a community that understands and appreciates the collector mindset. What makes Trainbid different from other marketplaces?
Trainbid was built by collectors, for collectors — not by a big tech company or general e-commerce platform. Every feature on Trainbid is designed with hobbyists in mind, and that's what sets us apart. Lower Fees - it's better to spend that extra cash on your hobby, not on site fees. Unlike other marketplaces that take 15% or more, Trainbid keeps selling fees low so more of each sale stays in your pocket. Sellers keep 92.5% of every sale, and we are working on ways to make that even more. Knowledgeable, Collector-Focused Support: Trainbid is staffed by people who know the hobby — not generic support agents reading from a script. We understand the difference between a caboose and a consist, and we're here to help when something doesn't go according to plan. Built for collectors at every level: Whether you're an experienced dealer or someone handling an inherited collection for the first time, Trainbid is easy to use, fair, informative and supportive. Community Over Chaos: No bots, fake listings, or spammy ads — Trainbid is a curated marketplace that values trust, transparency, and shared enthusiasm for the hobby. Hobby-Specific: Forget big, expensive platforms that just don't get the hobby. Trainbid is built for enthusiasts to make buying, selling, learning, and collecting a better experience, all in one place.

Is it safe to buy on Trainbid?
Yes! Trainbid partners with Stripe, one of the world's most trusted payment platforms, used by companies like Amazon, Shopify, and DoorDash to securely process payments. Your payment is not released to the seller until after delivery and you approve the item. You'll have 5 days after delivery to inspect your purchase and confirm everything is as expected.
Need more time?
You can add 30-day Buyer Protection at checkout for extra peace of mind.
What payment methods are accepted?

What is the "Claim It!" feature?
"Claim It!" lets you secure high-value items with just 10% down. The remaining balance is split into two payments at 30 and 60 days. The seller holds the item for you until it's paid in full — making it a simple, safe, and flexible way to lock in rare finds.
Can I negotiate or make offers?
Absolutely. You can bid, make offers, or even post a "Want to Buy" ad to let sellers come to you with custom offers.
Do sellers offer combined shipping?
In most cases, yes! Many sellers offer combined shipping discounts when you purchase two or more different items. A seller's combined shipping discount will be shown on the listing page and will automatically apply at check out.
How long does it take to receive my order?
In most cases, sellers ship items within 3 business days. To encourage timely shipping, Trainbid charges a small late shipment fee to sellers who do not ship within this time frame. The total delivery time will vary depending on the shipping service selected at checkout and your distance from the seller.
Can I track my collection value?
Yes — our My Collection feature was built by real collectors who wanted a smarter, easier way to manage their inventory. Our smart-entry forms use intelligent word detection to help speed things up — Brand, Scale, Gauge, Train Type, Road Name, etc. Give it a try! You can easily add both new purchases and existing items to track their value and organize your collection over time. We're continuously improving this tool to make inventorying and collecting even simpler.
I'm looking for a specific item - can I post a Want To Buy?
Yes! Trainbid has a dedicated Want to Buy (WTB) section where you can post the exact item you're searching for, and sellers can respond with offers if they have a match. The entire transaction is handled safely through Trainbid, so you can buy with confidence knowing everything stays secure from start to finish.
How does the "Want to Buy" feature work?
If you're looking for something specific, you can post a Want to Buy (WTB) listing. Sellers can then contact you directly through your ad with offers that match what you're searching for. Even better — if a seller has the item saved in their My Collection, Trainbid will automatically notify them that a buyer is looking for it. It's a smart way to connect collectors and make rare finds happen faster.
What if my item arrives damaged or not as described?
At Trainbid, we're collectors and hobbyists ourselves — we understand that sometimes a purchase doesn't go as planned. If there's an issue with your item, you can open a claim through Trainbid within 5 days of delivery. We'll work with both you and the seller to quickly resolve the issue. If you added 30-Day Buyer Protection at checkout, you'll have even longer coverage, and Trainbid will stay involved as a neutral third party to help mediate the process.
Can I cancel my order after purchasing?
Yes. If the seller has not yet shipped the item you can request to cancel the order. However, in some cases you may incur a reversal credit card fee from Stripe which will be deducted from your refund.
How long do I have to pay when I win an auction?
Trainbid requires that all won auctions be paid within 72 hours of securing the winning bid. If payment is not completed within 72 hours, the seller may cancel the sale and re-list the item at their discretion.
Can I message sellers with questions before buying?
Yes! You can send a message to sellers directly from the listing page if you have questions about an item before bidding or buying.
Is sales tax collected on purchases?
Sales tax is collected only in states where Trainbid has established "nexus" — meaning we have reached a required threshold of sales activity that triggers tax obligations. Once this threshold is met, we are legally required to collect and remit sales tax on behalf of both buyers and sellers. If applicable, sales tax will be calculated at checkout. Currently, California (our marketplace facilitator state) is the only state where we are required to collect sales tax. You can learn more about marketplace sales tax rules here (https://stripe.com/guides/guide-to-sales-tax-and-vat-for-marketplace-sellers#marketplace-laws-in-the-us)
